A day out in Ipswich, Suffolk

Ipswich, Suffolk

Ipswich is actually England’s oldest continuously settled Anglo-Saxon town - with medieval streets and architectural sights to enjoy, indeed there are 12 medieval churches within the town itself. However it is has more contemporary outlook too such as the award-winning Willis Corroon building and the recently redeveloped marina.

Christchurch Mansion is a fine Tudor mansion, housing furniture, clocks, and the most important collection of work by artists John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough outside of London. In typical contrast the modern Wolsey Art Gallery, is one of the most popular visitor attractions in East with regular exhibition and displays of modern art.

Ipswich offers plenty of open space to walk, play and relax. In particular the Orwell Country Park has stunning views over the river estuary, and the magnificent Orwell Bridge.

Ipswich has a strong maritime heritage, its port founded in the 6/7th C. The Victorian wet dock has recently undergone a fabulous renaissance and I well worth a visit it’s with waterfront bars and restaurants, a marina, and cruises down the river on the Orwell Lady.

If shopping is your thing Ipswich is one of the region’s best retail centres, featuring big-name stores and more specialist shops.

Finally if you have enough energy to make it through to the evening try one of the numerous eating establishments, friendly Greene King pubs, visit the cinema, or take in a show at The Regent or New Wolsey Theatres.
